Phoenix Mahjong Club (PMC) FAQs

What is the PMC?

PMC is a social club that pairs the love for the Chinese tile game, Mahjong, with an exclusive space and network to learn the game, socialize and play.

We play the American version of mahjong, using the National Mahjong League (NMJL) card.

No, we allow players of all abilities to join the club, but we do not teach at our social events. You must have some level of experience playing American mahjong. 

We hold a variety of mahjong socials throughout the month – both daytime and evening. The schedule for 2026 will be released in November.  See our events calendar for more details. 

Overview of Events:

Mahjong Socials throughout the membership year. Catered meals, snacks & drinks are provided at the mahjong socials.

Mahjong Drop-in for members.  As a bonus, you can bring guests for a small fee. We will have snacks and NA beverages.

We will have tables assigned by skill level – if you have some experience playing (even if you just recently learned), we will make sure you are at the right table. 

You will have access to the PMC member database, allowing you to reach out and form your own games with others in the club.

In partnership with Luxe Mahjong, PMC members will be given an exclusive discount code to purchase Luxe Mahjong sets.

Food and drinks are provided at all mahjong socials; not just pretzels and candy (although we offer those as well!), we cater meals for each event and offer NA beverages. 

We will have light snacks and NA beverages at our mahjong drop-ins.

Starting in January 2026, all PMC events will be held at our new, PMC-dedicated space in Old Town Scottsdale (across from Fashion Square Mall)! 

No, we provide all the necessities- mahjong sets, racks, mats, etc. We do ask that you bring your own NMJL card but always have some on hand in case you forget.

We have 3 options when joining the club:

  1. All-Access Mahj Pro Membership – For the avid player who wants the flexibility to play whenever and as often as they can. Enjoy unlimited access to the club including all drop-in sessions, mahjong socials and pop-up events! There will be an opportunity to play mahjong 5 days a week! Also, enjoy 10% off merchandise (excluding mahjong tables). Price: $1695/year, or if you cannot commit to the yearly we offer a 6-month Mahj Pro for $895.
  2. Social Membership – Not yet ready to go Pro? The Social Membership will give you full access to (2) weekly PMC events a week – one social and one drop-in. Also, enjoy 10% off merchandise (excluding mahjong tables). You can choose to join this plan yearly at a price of  $1295/year or broken up into 12 monthly payments of $110.
  3. Junior Membership – We have created a Junior Membership that is meant for those who are not quite ready to commit to a full membership. This option will allow a three-month trial subscription for $295 with 1 total drop-in event per week (4 times a month).  This membership does not give you access to catered socials.

Beginner Mahjong Lessons FAQs

What type of Mahjong does the PMC teach?
We teach American Mahjong using the National Mahjong League (NMJL) Card.
Lessons are typically 3 hours. We occasionally offer a 2-day, 2-hour lesson (4 hours total) with an increased lesson fee, but we find that everything can be covered and learned in 3 hours.

The PMC teaches mahjong throughout the valley, but our permanent location is in old-town Scottsdale.  Please see the lessons and events tab to register for a lesson. 

We also offer private in-home lessons. You provide the home; we provide all of the necessities! Must have a minimum of 4 people. Please contact us to schedule. 

We will review everything – the mahjong tiles, understanding the suits, the rules of play including how to read the National Mahjong League card, dealing, the Charleston (how to build a hand), along with guided game play.
3-hour lessons are $115 per person which includes a National Mahjong League card for you to keep. 2-day, 2-hour lessons (4 hours total) have an increased fee. The fee is announced when we share details for the 2-day lessons.
Yes – we offer private lessons with a minimum of 4 people. We provide all the necessities, including tables and chairs if needed. You are responsible for providing the location. Contact us to discuss pricing and schedule.

The Phoenix Mahjong Club (PMC) is just what the Mahjong scene in Phoenix, Arizona needed. Founders Julia, Leah, and Rachel not only brought a community of women together who were eager to join this growing trend, but did it flawlessly.
